LB's hoops season review

LBCC basketball had a fairly decent season this year. The men's team is going to the NWAACC playoffs, and the women were forced to work out the kinks that come with having a brand new team.

The women's team had an up and down season at best. The Lady Roadrunners had it hard enough with a low turnout of players but to add on top of that multiple players became injured, one had a house burn down and others contracted H1N1.

Head coach Teresa Guerra came into a few more players late in the season but only played one of them. Multiple players in multiple games had to play the full 40 minute game length. Coaches should take advantage of those extra players and give key players a break and recover.

After Guerra found extra players to practice with, the women won two games, then fell back into a hole. Winning game story and others can be found on the women's basketball homepage.

The LB women may not have a big list of wins, but 0they show more heart than any other team and never look discouraged no matter the score. Would the outcome of the games in the latter part of the season have been different? Maybe and maybe not, but you got to give the team that chance to find out. Players from this season will have to try out again as Guerra looks to recruit a lot of new freshman talent for next season.

The men's team however has had a fairly good season. Winning all but two home games and clinching a spot in the playoffs for a chance at the NWAACC Championship.

LB's men play with a style and flair that must have been rubbed off from coach Randy Falk because most the players are very graceful and fluid. No show boating slam dunks or overly aggressive tactics, except for starter Taylor Roos.

Roos spends more time at the free throw line than any other player at any game. It's not an accident that he ends up there, Roos can shoot free throws with his eyes closed . The games in which LB won, Roos had at least 12 free throw attempts and hasn't missed one. Games where LB lost, Roos shot less than 10 free throws.

If Falk wants to push the team to the top then Roos needs to get to the free throw line.

“The way we win ball games is getting to the free throw line, and we’re very successful at that, and if we remember to do that we give ourselves a better chance,” said head coach Randy Falk.” I appreciate how hard our guys played and we are going to the NWAACC’s [playoffs] for the second year in a row and that’s a very positive reflection on our guys.”

Poem reading in the diversity center

I've never sat in on a poem reading before and it was rather enjoyable and "deep."

The theme was women, so everyone who was participating brought in poems written by women from pre-civil war days to today, students also read poems they themselves created.

The poem I liked most was by a student whose name I did not catch, but his poem was called "Note to Self."

While he was reading his poem I thought the meaning was being lost; lost in the world and in yourself. I was close but his interpretation that he told after reading was about an experience while just walking when he said he felt like he was in the past and that the past was getting mixed up with the present.

Overall I feel like I would enjoy sitting in on another poem reading session no matter the topic.

Writers Choice: My Choice

I'm going to write another opinion/editorial piece because I feel like I need practice explaining my point view in writing. My topic will be LBCC's basketball season for both men and women.

I was going to do another profile, but it would be best to learn the game and the athletes better before deciding which player to pick for a profile.

Stephen King's "On Writing"

I really enjoyed Stephen King's "On Writing," because it did not read like a classroom textbook, a novel or a biography.

To me the reading felt informal and personal. Like someone giving you advice, not just telling you what to do.

I will take away from this, King's "toolbox." I've never heard a clear reason to using to much information till that.

To me scariest part of writing is not the start. But I'll take away King's idea to just diving in and letting it out. For me a writers block really sucks and I feel stuck and won't write a thing. But diving in without thinking twice when blocked is really very helpful. I don't feel this is true for only writing but can be applied to everyday life as well, Just jump in and go for it.

Jennifer brought useful info and good stories to help describe what it's like as a reporter and editor and what it was like to cover various subjects when working for smaller papers.

The part about "waxing," made me laugh, I don't know but it sounds like cutting out articles, gluing them then taking a picture sounds tedious and a pain in the ass. How bad would it suck to notice a typo after its all said and done.

I liked the tips on advancing through the ranks. Starting as a news reporter/writer and move on to bigger papers or being a section editor and you can stay where you are.

A quote she said in the end about feature writing I liked and wrote down "don't talk about the bakery talk about the pie."

Josh Hill: local hero

Now it's time fellow Oregonian and AMA pro motocross rider Josh Hill gets in position to make something of himself and live up to the hype that has been floating around him for years.

Hill was one of three other riders in motocross history to be recruited from the amateur ranks to ride for factory Yamaha, but unlike his predecessors. He went his first three years since turning pro in 2006, with no wins and few podiums.

Factory Yamaha showed much patience in trying to mold Hill into a champion, but old flaring injuries and lack of focus left Yamaha no choice but to let Hill go and not re-sign him.

But as one door closes another opens and that is what happened with Hill.

S&M Band of Mission Indians Yamaha who signed superstar motocross rider James Stewart a year ago as their top rider. Now, Hill has been signed on as his teammate.

Speed TV's Jeff Emig talked with Hill said Hill visited a nutritionist and found various food allergies including meats. Hill cut the allergic foods from his diet, dropped around 15 pounds and is now a title threat in 2010 Supercoss series.

If Hill puts together a consistent season then he very well may be the first supercross champion from Oregon.

So far Hill has been on the podium every race, and is now tied with Ryan Dungey for top spot. Dungey won't be easily beaten but he does make big mistakes and if Hill can capitalize on that then he take home a win and maybe the championship.

Although this season is proving to be an epic one with both past reigning champions out with injuries. This season will be tough for Hill as Ryan Villopoto and Dungey also have a shot to claim their first supercross title.

Moving forward: The Andrew Carter profile

Standing 6-foot-3inches with tattoos covering much of each forearm, Andrew Carter, 25, cuts an imposing figure in the middle of the key as Linn-Benton's starting center.

Never mind the calm and easy-going personality that makes him pleasant to speak with. Come game time Carter proves to be a force on the court averaging over 14 points a game and consistently leads the team in rebounds.

Basketball did not come into Carters life until eighth grade. Carter grew up moving all around the Northwest with his troubled single mother. Carter said he spent a few years in the "system."

."I was in and out of different projects, I was in a foster home for a year and got into a little bit of trouble here and there." Said Carter. "I spent my junior and senior year at Corvallis, sophomore year in Warrenton, freshman year in Astoria and eighth grade in Portland."

When Carter was 17 he met his future wife Andrea. Together they have two children; Andrew Jr., 5, and Ezra age 3. They both are currently awaiting the arrival of their third child Zavier, between April and May. Carters wife and kids attend all the home games and can be seen sitting front row cheering their player on.

In 2004 Carter came to Linn-Benton for a term but felt it wasn't as important as working and supporting his family. He spent the next few years working physically laboring jobs such as roofing and construction but it soon burned him out. Now, Carter now has been a student since last year and is pursuing a degree in sports science and looking to possibly further his education at Western Oregon University.

Carter played basketball from eighth grade until his sophomore year in high school, but trouble kept him from making the team his junior and senior year. When a friend of Carter's invited him out to open gym last year, he got to play against a couple of guys on the basketball team and felt he could compete at their level.

"He's the heart and soul of our team,"said head coach Randy Falk. "His leadership is very strong, it is the kind of leadership that guys look up to and respect, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for Andrew for what he's doing in basketball and in his life in general."

Carter and the team made it into the NWAACC playoffs last year but were eliminated after the first two rounds. This year, however, leaves Carter and the rest of the team in high spirits.

"The team is a lot better than last year, there is more emphasis on team and there's no selfishness." said Carter. "The chemistry is great we are all friends and buddies and joke around. We care for each other, and get on each other's nerves once in awhile but we're like a family unit. Just like the big brother picking on the little brother."

Teammate Xavier Watson has a similar mentality to Carter about the team. "Chemistry is perfect," said Watson. "We're going to win the whole thing."

Childhood dream: To be a professional baseball player.
Fondest memory: "In eighth grade the first year I played basketball, I actually went the wrong way and went to the wrong basket. First game, first time in, I got the ball and missed the layup." said Carter
Perfect day: "No classes. Get up, work out, eat a really good breakfast at The Original Breakfast, that is my favorite place in Albany. Then take my kids to the park, go to the lake and barbecue with friends," said Carter
Tattoos: Left forearm is a large shaded skull with ribbon bearing the words "Till death do us part" signifying the love between he and his wife. Right forearm displays the Greek symbol for Christianity called Chi Rho, a tattoo he and a friend serving in Iraq got together.

Beef and Broccoli blog post review

"De-constructed beef and broccoli" is an awesome idea with a recipe so simple I could probably do it the dark.

The recipe link here Tasty Tidbits, is Jana West's blog on simple meals to make at home under $10.

I personally have not made the recipe yet. All I have so far is the steak, vegetables and soy sauce packets. I might just go out and buy the Chinese mustard and honey just to try it.

I love recipes that involve meat and the simplicity of the fast food packet idea for a sauce on a homemade dish to me is awesome. Maybe next a recipe involving the Arby's "Horsey Sauce" or Taco Bell's "Fire" Sauce.

Review: "Sherlock Holmes"

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the screen to play the main role for Guy Ritchies interpretation of "Sherlock Holmes." The film has small doses of action, a pinch of comedy and some mystery film value.

Based in late 1800's London. Holmes alongside his weary and fearful sidekick Dr. Watson (Jude Law). Must discover the whereabouts and master plan of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) who was tried and hanged for his crimes, was later declared missing and possibly alive. After his tomb was found smashed and eyewitness' claiming to see Blackwood rise up and walk away.

The rest of the movie is spent figuring out where Blackwood is and foiling his plan to take over London and then move on to America.

Along the way our hero Holmes likes to spend his leisure time getting messed up on either alcohol or drugs, and going to a bare knuckles barn yard fight which Holmes seems to really enjoy. It felt like Holmes only used his super detective brain to figure out his next punch and not his next clue.

Roger Ebert described the new Holmes personality best:

"Holmes' canonical devotion to cocaine is here augmented by other drugs and a great deal of booze. Yet Holmes has the body of a lithe athlete, the skills of a gymnast and the pugilism of a world champion. He and Watson (who is, you recall, only a doctor, although one with clients who must be puzzled about his office hours) spring readily into action like Batman and Robin."

The film is visually nice to look at with everything done in mostly earthy tones, along with Victorian style buildings and structures complement the grim, foggy and dark scenery shown through the movies entirety.

Although this is a good movie to sit and watch. Critics like Yglesias feel the interpretation of Holmes is wrong:

"this action-oriented version of Holmes is untrue to the original. I think this is wrong. The print Holmes is clearly described as an expert singlestick fighter and accomplished bare knuckle boxer. He gets into fisticuffs and always wins. Hand-to-hand combat is never the feature of Conan Doyle’s stories because it wouldn’t be interesting to read a detailed account of beating a guy up with a walking stick. But bringing more emphasis to this kind of thing is exactly what a screen adaptation of a well-known print character should be for—elements of the character that are de-emphasized by the print medium are rightly brought into sharper focus for a movie."

With a valuable missing piece of equipment gone missing in the films end. It looks as if "Sherlock Holmes" will be having sequel or two in the future.

This film deserves two stars, a star for the actors and for the visuals. Maybe the next movie will feel more like a mystery movie and not so much a super hero film.

Mix crime, mystery, suspense and drama. What do you get... Robert Downey Jr.

Downey Jr plays the star role in the new movie "Sherlock Holmes." Alongside Jude Law as his faithful sidekick Dr. John Watson. Directed by Guy Ritchie.

They solve mysteries together and you get to see inside the mind of Holmes as he pieces together a crime with pure brilliance.

That's what I am expecting since I have yet to see the movie. Nor have i read any of the books. I all I knew about "Sherlock Holmes" since I was little was he could solve any mystery while he wore a goofy hat with a front and back bill and used his magnified glass to search for clues.

I am going into this movie very opened minded, as I have only seen the commercials and so far I am pretty excited. I am not to familiar with the cast so I have no expectations on what to expect from this film.

Every year 16 out of 34 teams make it to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Championship Tournament in March, for a chance at northwest basketball supremacy.

There are high expectations by coaches and players, for Linn-Benton's Roadrunners to make it to the 2010 NWAAC's tournament for both men's and women's teams. And although the men's team is on track, winning their first two league games. The women are facing unexpected obstacles this season, and losing their first two.

Prior to league the men have been winning most their games, and according to head coach Randy Falk, "The more you win the more confidence your team will have."

However both the men's wins were in overtime, and that is something the team is trying to avoid.

"We're trying to make it a tradition here at Linn-Benton." Said coach Falk, commenting that he has taken his team to the NWAACC's tournament for the past two years and plans on making it three.

"If we keep playing like we do and play hard, we're going to get there." Said freshman guard Taylor Roos who is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to his free throws; making 16/19 for the first league game and 10/11 in the second game, sealing the win.

The women's team however is having an almost opposite season when compared to the men.

Losing their first two league games to Lane CC and Southwestern Oregon CC. The Lady Roadrunners are having a tough time finding a balance with an entirely new team, with only one returning player, sophomore guard Kalah Heacock.

"It's hard because we don't have that team chemistry coming into the season, but we try and it's been hard with all the injuries; every time someone is in, someone else is out." Said Jamie Wilson, who was the game's top scorer against SWOCC with 22 points.

Besides being a young team, the Roadrunners don't have a full bench like most of their competition. Which forces some players to play a full game against opposition that has fresh bodies coming off the bench, resulting in a tired and fatigued team.

Despite the odds being against the Lady Roadrunners, the team still has high hopes of making it into the NWAACC tournament in March.

"Our final goal is the NWAACC's tournament, and we're are definitely in one of the toughest leagues with Umpqua, Clackamas and Lane. They're all ranked in the top four and we definitely want to be in one of those positions before NWAACC's [tournament]." Said women's head coach Teresa Guerra who remains positive during a rocky season.

If the men can control the game in the beginning instead of mainly in overtime, and the women can find some more fresh bodies; it should be an exciting season for both teams as they attempt to take LBCC to the top, for victory and bragging rights.

LBCC is currently tied for first with Chemeketa in league, while the women remain tied for third against Portland CC.

My first feature story

Sources for interviews will include both head coaches for Linn-Benton, key players from that particular game and possibly some spectators.

Linn-Benton wins again

Last Tuesday the Linn-Benton Road Runners went to Clackamas Community College to take on the Cougars, and came away with the win, for their third consecutive win.

With a healthy team and win against Clackamas, the Cougars lose their third place spot to LB going into the NWAACC Championship Tournament that is held at Mt. Hood Community College Nov. 19.

Game one of the match did not fall in LB's favor as the opposing team had fierce kills. The Cougars kill skills looked to overwhelm LB and the Road Runners lost the first game 18-25. Game two was close, 25-21, with LB taking game two; they seemed to be figuring out there opponents strength. In game three LB's blocking game stepped up, blocking most of the Cougars attempted kills to end the game 25-15. Game four was a repeat of the third with incredible blocks and well placed kills, the road Runners defeated the Cougars 25-13, for a final score of 3-1.

"This win really set us up going into the NWACC tournament, were upward in momentum. And I said all along if had everybody healthy and everybody brought their game that they're capable of we can beat teams like this." Said head coach Jayme Frazier after LB's win against Clackamas.

Sophomore Stephanie Mugleston who led the teams kills for the night with 14 said “we pulled together and really played as a team, and came prepared." Other top match players include sophomore Luci DeLong with 10 kills and 18 digs.

Road Runners win two at home

Over this past weekend the Linn-Benton Community College Road Runners won two consecutive home matches over Friday and Saturday. The matches were against Southwestern Oregon Community College and Umpqua Community College.

Friday night’s game was against SOCC and looked to be up against a tough opponent as the Road Runners were down by seven before scoring their first point, and lost the first game 16-25. But that was not the end as the Road Runners made quick work of the third game winning 25-17 and eventually winning the next two games with scores of 25-21 and 26-24 for the match’s win of 3-1. Sophomore Stephanie Mugleston led the team’s kills with 17 for the night, while team mate freshman Mackenzie Gundlach led the team’s assists with 36.

Saturday’s game against Umpqua looked to be fairly easy for the Road Runners as they handled their opponents 25-16. But in the second game the visiting team showed a comeback although the Road Runners kept it close, they lost game two 22-25. The third game was a flip-flop of the first as the roadrunners won 25-22, then 25-17 for the overall match win of 3-1. Top players for the match included Sophomore Luci DeLong with 15 kills, Stephanie Mugleston with 14 kills, Mackenzie Gundlach with 50 assists and freshman Emily Buchheit with six aces.

“From day one we have dealt with injuries, from back injuries to illness’s like H1N1 for every single match” said head coach Jayme Frazier, commenting that her team has not been at full strength thus far in the season. “For this weekend I asked the team and individuals to step up, and they did and proved that they can do it.” That was the biggest part of the weekend she said, was with a lot of players out with illness, the individuals she asked to step up really did and that allowed the games to end in Linn-Benton’s favor, that and playing consistent for both matches.

Linn-Benton is currently in fourth for NWAACC’s southern region league and has one more away game against Clackamas before the NWAACC Championships.

Teriyaki love

Nestled between Great clips and Pizza Hut and across from parking lot from the Heritage mall. Is a little restaurant that specializes in all things teriyaki.

When first walking into Love Love Teriyaki you'll want look at the large menu board and choose from 15 different combination plates and bowls. The plates come with chicken (teriyaki or spicy), beef, pork or shrimp. there are also "yaki soba" and "yaki udon" noodle dishes.

Once you find a table it usually takes about five or ten minutes to receive your food and engorge yourself in teriyaki perfection. Come hungry because the serving sizes are very generous.

There are several daily lunch specials for $6.25. I had the spicy chicken plate that came with what looked like a pound charbroiled spicy chicken, a sumo size helping of rice, and fresh cabbage with crisp oriental dressing. The meal was very satisfying but I could not finish the whole meal, so I boxed it up for later.

The price range is $6.25-$8.95 and you definitely get what you pay for here. I've been to Love Love Teriyaki several times with various friends and everyone including myself have become a fan. The only downfall to this teriyaki treat is that they are not open Sundays.

Secure your next rental deposit

Moving away from home for first time and into your own place is exciting. But when it comes time to move like a lot of college student do, they often feel ripped off when they won’t be seeing any or little of their $300-$500 security deposit. Managers may say the deposit was kept for cleaning and damages that were made, and that’s where most tenants give up, and receive nothing even if they feel like they should have got something.

There is a way to receive a full security deposit or at least most of it. Before you rent, be sure to check the apartment complex’s policies and check with the manager of what the security deposit covers. Usually it covers cleaning and damages. Joni Kelsey, manager of Oak Vale apartments in Corvallis, said “we are usually generous with giving back deposits,” and claimed most fees are from “unclean window frames and tracks that often can accumulate moisture and cause mold.”

If you decide to rent be sure to do a walkthrough before moving in and write down any previous damages done to the apartment so management can keep record of it. Also take pictures of every room for your own records. If you missed anything or something breaks within your first couple days, then tell management so you are not held responsible.

After you’re all settled in be sure to place work orders with management for any problem that arises and keep a copy of the work order for your records. Try not to attach heavy object such as bookshelves or ceiling plants, as these can cause large holes that you might not be able to patch yourself. Also stay up on utility bills or management is entitled to take out some deposit to cover expenses left unpaid.

When you are ready to move out, give a 30-day notice. If you do not give notice that you are leaving, you will lose the entire deposit. Once all your belongings are out of the unit be sure to note all damages caused by you and ask management how much will be taken out for repairs. But if your pad is just as good or better then when you moved in, you should expect your full deposit. Lastly take pictures of every room again so if your deposit is gone for some fabricated reason, then you got evidence to back yourself up and for last resort, something to show if it goes to small claims court.

Motocross races and events happen just about every weekend all year round in the northwest, and all you have to do is Google northwest tracks to find various websites and schedules. But there certain events that only happen once a year here and motorsport fans from all over come to witness these annual events in person. The atmosphere of one these events are like a rock concert on steroids and its family friendly as well. This is a list of the biggest motocross events that happen annually.

1. Monster Energy Supercross-

Round 15 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series. Qwest Field in Seattle is home to the Seattle Seahawks and the most awesome show on earth, Supercross! With over 67,000 seats, Qwest Field allows fans to watch all the action from wherever your seat in stadium is. The track is built on top of the football field and features man-made obstacles that would make even Evel Kneivel nervous. The main events don’t start till about 7 p.m. but most fans arrive before noon to attend the open pro pits for autographs and watch practice. It’s a good idea to watch practice because the track is so gnarly your favorite racer might get hurt before the night’s qualifiers even start. http://www.supercross.com/

2. P.I.R. anniversary race-

Portland International Raceway’s annual anniversary race. Three years ago P.I.R. held a 40 year anniversary race that attracted lots of vendors, spectators, and pro’s from around the country. Since P.I.R has held that first anniversary race they have been holding one every year since and the event continues to grow in popularity and has a pro purse of 15,000 dollars. The event has race classes from 50cc beginners to 450cc pros and is held on a Thursday night under stadium lights, and features a special pro only section of the track where a 100ft jump is placed and sends riders about 40ft into air much like a supercross track. http://www.thursdaynightmotocross.com/

3. P.R.O's Top Gun-

Top Gun MX team shootout. This annual event is held on Labor Day weekend and goes on for 4 days at Washougal MX Park. Teams are usually put together by various motorcycle shops and companies within the industry. The event has 40 different classes to watch, and feature some of the most talented riders from around the northwest. Specialty races and games put on just for show include the goon race, where all riders dress up in various outfits and costumes and take turns jumping from small wooden ramp into a pit of mud, the winner is chosen based on style or lack thereof and their outfit.The Team with the best overall results for the weekend are awarded a hand made aluminum Top Gun trophy. http://www.pacificracingmx.com/

4. Motocross nationals-

AMA Motocross Championships at Washougal MX Park. Round eight of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross championships are held in Washougal, Wash. Usually during the last weekend of July. The Pro races are held on Saturday which includes 450cc, 250cc, and women’s classes that make up an entire day of racing. Over 30,000 spectators are in attendance to watch the world’s fastest racers battle it out on the most scenic national track in the country. This race allows you to get so close to the track you can almost touch the racers, but that also means you’re eating the dirt there tire throws off when the pass by if you’re not paying attention. Today was the annual DEVOL P.R.O. Race at Washougal MX park and the competition was as stacked as it has ever been.
The pro class had several nationally ranked pros including those of Ryan Abrigo who won the second 450 class moto, Adam Metzler who stayed in the top 5 for all his motos, and the rest of the field was equally fast.
Track conditions for washougal were perfect as the dirt retained a lot of moisture and stayed fairly tacky throughout the course of the day, allowing for lots of traction and ruts.
For moto two of the 450 class race Metzler nearly had the holeshot (first rider out the first turn) but it was quickly snagged away by Abrigo who once in the lead never looked back.
Nathan Whitlow who now resides in Mississippi went down in the second corner and after he picked himself up was in dead last. However it was apparent that moving away form the Northwest to train with former world champion Trampas Parker has paid off as Whitlow went from last to fourth by the end of the race, nearly passing Metzler for third at the finish line.
Theres a lot of talent at local races this year and it wont be easy to come away with a title for this season of Northwest racing.

Finally the motocross national season has started and the t.v. coverage this year is great. The only real disappointment was that James Stewart was a no-show at the series opener at Glen Helen Raceway leaving his number one plate up for grabs this season. James claimed he wanted to race, but it was up to his team manager Larry Brooks to decide if Stewart would race nationals since his contract is for Supercross only.

Washington native Ryan Villopoto won the series opener for his first national win the 450 class. But again more disappointment as Villopoto caught and hurt his knee at the second round at Hangtown Raceway. Ultimately ending his race and season.

I'm kinda bummed with the way this season is starting to look, already two top racers are out. It's anybody's game now

Saturday, May 23, the 2009 motocross nationals started with their opening round at Glen Helen raceway in San Bernardino, Calif.

Adam Metzler is an AMA licensed pro who is competing as a privateer on the national circuit. He currently rides a Honda CRF450 and travels along with his technician Chris Booth. Metzler is 21 years old and is from Gaston, Ore. This is his fourth season at being a national license holder. He has had a lot of success as local rider here in the northwest, and each year he finish’s higher and higher up as he gains experience among the world’s best riders.

Metzler wasn’t too thrilled about how the weekend’s national at Glen Helen ended when a rock punctured his front tire leaving him unable to finish and having to pack up and look forward to next weekend’s race at Hangtown raceway in Prairie City, Calif.

When did you first start riding, and when did you think this could be your career?

AM: I started when I was about seven or eight riding in the woods. Doing it for fun at first and then just kept doing it for fun until I was 14 then decided I wanted to actually take it to the next level. When I turned 16 I realized I could make somewhat of a career out of it and turned pro, now I’m trying to make a living off it.

When was your first race, how old were you?

AM: I want to say my first race was on an RM80 when I was about 11 at Albany.

You’ve seen a lot of success locally here in the northwest, how much different is it now being a national rider?

AM: It’s a huge difference. I mean you go from getting top three’s and winning all the time back in the northwest, and then you come down here and you think you’re trying your hardest but (laughs) the top guys are lapping you half way through the moto and you just realize that it’s pretty intense.

Now you race the 450 class as opposed to the 250 class, why is this switch better for you?

AM: To tell you what I would be better on a 250, but it involves a bunch more money in the small bike class because everyone has a satellite or factory ride, and I think you stand a better chance in the 450 class because all you have to do is dump 500 bucks into an exhaust system where your pretty comparable with the rest of them, but where with the smaller bike you would have to dump six grand in it for it to even come close. Plus maintenance and everything is way less on the bigger bike.

But isn’t the competition a lot harder?

AM: Uh..yes and no. The only thing that’s the big difference about it, is all the 450 guys are skilled in what they do, they’ve been doing it forever so they know how to handle stuff and don’t make nearly as many mistakes. I mean if you can ride the 450 good then it’s pretty much the same, but they’re a lot of fast guys.

Now that you have Chris Booth your technician how is different than before you two teamed up?

AM: Oh it’s a world of difference going from having to worry about the race then coming off with something wrong with the bike then trying to fix it yourself for the next moto and just adding stress. And now you come off the track and being able to tell someone what’s wrong with it and talk it over is way easier on the mind and makes life a thousand times easier.

How did you two team up?

AM: Corey Hollen and me hanging out like every day, and he was living with him and one day Corey was like Booth said he would travel everywhere with you and help you out as much as you needed. Of course me being my stubborn self said oh yeah ok. So then one weekend I just gave him a shot and ever since then we’ve been hooked and he’s living with me.

Did you travel a lot as an amateur like a lot of the other pros?

AM: Yeah we did as much as money would allow, we did Texas every year, Las Vegas World Mini every year, and tried to hit up Loretta Lynn’s in Tennessee if we were good enough and made it, other than that we did mostly local races in the northwest.

How supportive is your family with your racing?

AM: I want to say like 197 Percent behind me. Ever since I turned 18 and started turning pro and getting my own attitude and mind my dad kind of stepped back a little bit and let me do my own thing, but still behind me 100 percent, and they still come out and watch me. It’s better for them now there’s not two brothers racing now they just got to worry about one (laughs).

So goals for this season, are you trying to land a ride this season?

AM: Yeah I mean that’s what I’m shooting for every year, but the best I can do is just put my name out there whether it’s in the northwest scene or down here. Hopefully sooner than later someone will notice me. Practicing with all these guys down here I’m keeping up with them, someone has to see sooner or later so I’m just hoping and not going to give up, my older brother gave up to easily. I am going to keep pushing till either it’s not going anywhere or I get a ride then it will be that much easier

The warmer weather has finally arrived and along with it the departure of the rain. There are so many activities and hobbies that can finally be brought back into swing. Here are a few of my favorite activites to do in spring and summer, and if you're looking for something new, try one of mine.

One of the best ways to chill out and relax is to spend a day and go fishing, preferably with family or friends. Fishing offers you relaxing no pressure activity that allows for you to get back to our basic roots of survival and enjoy it. But of course fishing can turn into a competiton very easily so keep it fun. I also make bets for whoever catches the first fish, the biggest fish, and the most.

For the more adventurous thrill seeker I recommend trying dirtbike riding. Oregon has an abundance of state parks and private facilities that allow for numerous spots to ride, each very different from each other. For a list of Oregon OHV riding areas click here. Dirtbiking offers a challenging activity that can be very rewarding and is great for the family, I mean what kid doesn't want to ride a motorcycle?

A low key and low impact activity, try going to one of the many coastal towns that line the Oregon Coast. Many of these places like Newport offer tourists activities like Ripley's Believe it or Not museum, the sea lion caves, or one of their great restaurants that offer a great seafood selection.

My final and most favorite summer activity is to combine all three of the above options. Areas like the town of Warrenton just below Astoria offers a free riding and camping area, it is also right on the water so when you're done with riding you may go fishing then at night head to one of the nearby towns and grab a good dinner. Just make sure you do it with enjoyable company. Have fun.

The loss of a pet can be just as difficult as the death of a human, and is something anyone who has had an animal companion knows about since we as humans have life spans much longer than our dear animal friends.

On Friday May 22, my dear beloved Black Labrador Oreo had moved on to the other side while laying next to my mother at our country home in Hillsboro. There is nothing to prepare one for the emotions and feelings you face when the moment happens even if you think you're prepared.

Oreo was 12-year-old pure black lab with a white spot on the chest, hence the name Oreo. We picked him from a breeder when I was just a boy in elementary school. As a puppy he loved to play cause mischief, and that mentality stayed with him all his life. He didn't know a lot "trained" tricks, he just knew a few. However the tricks and skills he did know must have been self taught, for he could open any soda or water bottle and drink its contents, as well as get into coolers for subway sandwiches.

Having a lot of land to roam did not hurt either, as Oreo had abundant access to fields, forest's, and to a large pond to swim and loath in during the summer months. Oreo never wore a leash or even a collar because he was so loyal he would never run off, and he was also an outdoor only dog. The times he had to wear any of those items was to go visit the veterinarian and it never went very smooth.

In the later months of his life Oreo had developed cancer that formed a tumor and spread like wildfire. And as a family we decided not to put him down right away because he showed almost no signs of stress or pain, and as long as he was happy then we would enjoy his company until there is no other choice.

When Oreo's illness was taking the best of him, leaving him drained of energy and not eating.
So on May 22, a veterinarian from Companion Pets came to our house and re-assured us he was "ready to go," and we knew he would be miserable having a high fever and being ill in the hot months of summer.

My family buried him behind the creek that runs through our backyard. They made him a very nice little spot in the shade of the trees and covered his area with flowers all around. His spot is peaceful and is good reminder of the way Oreo was.

They say pets mirrors their owner, but maybe it's the owner that mirrors the pet. However it goes, it was a blessing to have friend like Oreo, he will be missed dearly.

What if your country called on you? Should you turn it down? What if you have already served a tour a duty and were asked to return back to lines of battle? Shouldn't you have a choice?

On Sunday May 17, Benji Lewis, 23, spoke at the United Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis. Lewis spoke about his involuntary activation back into the Marine Corps and his refusal to go back into service. The event was hosted by the band emma’s revolution, which is an activist band that is mix of pop and folk holding a concert for Lewis's cause. Their music is catchy and easy to follow and is meant to inspire action and open mindedness.

Lewis spoke of why he refused involuntary activation, and that individuals need to go “outside the framework” to achieve goals and reach a better future, but the only way to do that is to resist the influence of the world around you. Lewis spoke of his thoughts on America abusing military and economic power throughout the world.

Lewis’s experience in the Marine Corps made it sound like he might have felt distant from the world. “While you’re in the marine core it’s kind of hard to realize what you’re a part of.” Going on to talking about how there is no time for extra things the military offers like their college degree programs because of training.

Lewis wants to achieve a society that allows growth of the individual and not just the country and government, a society that is not using military force to build its strength.

Lewis enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17, served two tours in Iraq, and earned an honorable discharge after four years of active duty. Lewis is refusing to enlist in a third tour of duty as a mortar-man. Lewis was part of the first siege in Fallujah, and after his second tour became an urban combat instructor in hopes to “mitigate some of the effects of war, and I think I did though.... not enough.”

In a letter to the public Lewis said “My battalion returned to the states in August but deployed just four short months later in January 2005. Once again we deployed to Fallujah. Unlike during my first tour, there were few notable instances my second time around. For me it was seven months of reflection about the disaster we had created in Iraq, my government, and the price of service.”

Lewis is very open about his refusal to report to active duty. He speaks at various venues nationwide and is asking for support for his cause, and hopes others will raise their voice in hopes he will not be prosecuted but he is “prepared to be court-martialed.” said Lewis said.

In a previous post called Last Chance: A Window to the Big Time. I told the story of Nic Wolfer and his mission to obtain a national pro motocross license and compete on the top level.

Well Nic Wolfer applied shortly after the story was posted, and was granted a national license by the AMA. When asked how he felt about finally getting his license, he simply said "I'm nervous." It's relief to him that he has the license, now its on to the big show and time to put it all together.

Nic will be attempting to qualify at this years Washougal national race in Washougal Wash. The national will take place Saturday, July 25.

The bike Nic plans to compete in the event with is a 2008 Suzuki RM250. He will be one of the only riders to be competing on a two stroke bike.

Moms are celebrated eveywhere.

Mother's Day is a great way to show your mother how much she is loved an appreciated no matter how much she may shake her head at you.

Mother's Day in my family usually consists of dinner or a breakfast out for Mom and some cards and gifts. This year I got my mom the as seen on T.V. "Snuggie."

Mother's Day is also celebrated around the world in over 50 Countries, and is not specific to race, religion, or region. However Mother's Day is celebrated on different dates depending on the country and/or region.

The making of Father's Day came after Mother's Day said Wikipedia.com for the reason that moms had their own day

According to About.com mothers day in Japan is similar to ours in the U.S., because it falls on the second in May and children make their mothers gifts and art.

Metallica: the blackest comeback

Fans rejoiced as metal heavyweight band Metallica announced the release of their newest album in late 2008 "Death Magnetic." Their newest album in five years.

Not long after "Death Magnetics's" release Metallica went on an international "World Magnetic Tour" for late 2008 to mid 2009. fans couldn't be happier. "Death Magnetic" also won a couple Grammies "we are excited that the album won...Best Recording Package and My Apocalypse won for Best Metal Performance!" said Metallica on their site after the awards.

But that wasn't the end. On March 29. Metallica and Neversoft created "Guitar Hero: Metallica." Metallica's songs started appearing in the franchise in Guitar Hero 3 then Guitar Hero: World Tour before making a game based on just Metallica.

If that wasn't enough for the followers of one of the heaviest bands out there, Metallica also took over XM RADIO channel 42 and SIRIUS channel 27 for few months offering nothing but Metallica's music.

Metallica has redeemed themselves among fans who questioned their future as a band after the disappointing, rehab induced "St. Anger" album.

As a society we are hopelessly addicted to social networking sites. There are over 4.7 million registered users between Facebook.com, Myspace.com, and Twitter.com alone. But what do you do if you want to social network but don’t have any friends to network with, or just don’t like your friends?

Meet Leif K-Brooks, an 18-year-old high school student from Brattleboro, Vt. K-Brooks has created a web site called Omegle. Its main and only purpose is to connect you with other users anonymously and one on one for a quick, or long chat with a total stranger. There are an estimated 3,000 users and quickly growing.

Omegle is one of the simplest social web sites to use. You simply go to the Omegle homepage, and click the “start a chat” button and you’re instantly matched up with another user. Users on Omegle do not have to sign up or even give out an e-mail address to use the site, just chat that’s all.

The format of Omegle is simple. Once you’ve entered the chat room with your random paired match, you room name becomes “you,” and the anonymous person is labeled “stranger.”

It’s fun, random, and slightly awkward as some conversations start out wrong or obscene but it's just for fun. “I use Omegle a couple times during the week, the conversations that you get into with strangers are hilarious, and I just do it for fun,” said Omegle user Mark Meadows who claims to have used most popular networking sites at one time or another.

Omegle is completely anonymous so there is no filter on the site for age, language, and content. So users need to be prepared for anything to be said by users just on to get a laugh by being offensive. “Trolls are currently the biggest problem facing Omegle. Unfortunately, a percentage of the site's user base, instead of trying to have interesting conversations, likes to harass other users through vulgarity, spamming, and so on,” said K-Brooks in the his Official Omegle Blog.

So if you’re bored with the usual sites that connect you to people try Omegle, or just try it to try it.

The AMA Supercross season is officially over and at the end of the night it was James Stewart who took home the championship.
I got to enjoy the Saturday night event at home watching it live on the SPEED channel and the final round in Las Vegas.
The race did not disappoint as for me it was like a re-run of the Seattle race but with a little extra drama.
Stewart got out to an early lead but was quickly passed by Ryan Villopoto who was Seattle round's winner. Villopoto never looked back for the remainder of race and the rookie got his second win of the season.
Chad Reed who was trailing Stewart in points by six coming into the final round, stalked Stewart closely but did not make a move for the pass when the opportunity presented itself. Reed followed Stewart into the fastest sweeping corner on the track and as Stewart played it safe and looked to uncharacteristically let Reed pass, Reed aggressively cut into Stewart sending him off the course.
Reed would have been able to grasp the championship if Stewart placed four or more spots behind him, and since Stewart didn't bobble Reed tried to force him to. Reed finished three points behind Stewart in the final standings and had to hand his number one plate back to Stewart who was champion in 2007.

Pigs arent flying

I personally don't buy the whole swine flu pandemic that is happening and so far most deaths are in Mexico and no where else in the world.
According to Malcom Ritter, AP. there are 245 confirmed cases in the US, but only one death to a child in Texas. So far I think the media blew this way out of control and the government did not do a whole lot to calm the public down that appears to be freaking out.
A lot of people die in the US every year from ordinary flu, and ordinary flu is just as contagious as well. According to CDC.gov there were more deaths in lasts years flu season then the three previous flu seasons, and the flu season is beginning to start later and later than its usual time in February.
I don't think swine flu is something to completely freak out over, and until its like black plague status I don't really wanna worry about it.

At the beginning of 2009 the U.S. Product Safety Commission started the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The act was created as ban to toys and other children products.
Before the CPSIA was put into effect, the motorcycle industry did not think this rule applied to them and companies also were not warned that the ban could target certain products made by top ATV companies.
After the CPSIA was put into action top companies like American Honda Co, Inc. American Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Yamaha Motor Corporation USA. Had to tell all U.S. dealerships to remove their motorcycle inventory targeted to children 12 years and younger and put in warehouse.
The ATV companies have ask for the bill to be lifted for them while they work out some agreement, but the ban still remains.
If you catch a kid trying to digest a shiny new motorcycle, odds are that kid has been eating lead and/or other various vehicles for long time.

Saturday April 18, was a day to remember for Supercross fans as over 50 thousand people filled Qwest Field in Seattle for round 15 of the AMA Supercross Series to see what has been one of the closest points battles the sport has ever seen.

One of the biggest surprises of the night came from Ryan Villopoto, 20, Poulsbo, Wash., riding for Monster Energy Kawasaki won the event in front of his home state with all his family in attendance. Villopoto said "It was good night I couldn't ask for anything more in front of the hometown." This win marked Villopotos first win in the premier 450 class. However a bit of luck was thrown Villopoto’s way as race leader Mike Alessi went down early, and points leaders Chad Reed and James Stewart Jr., were plagued with bad starts and a first corner crash which guaranteed an interesting race.

Most attending the event expected a closer battle between James Stewart Jr., and Chad Reed who are battling for the championship which has only two rounds left. Stewart who has 332 points this far, now is beating Reed who has 329. “I could have pushed it to go for Ryan (Villopoto), but I knew the track was brutal,” said Stewart after it was over.

Reed who came to Seattle with a five point lead needed to have Stewart not finish more than two spots ahead of him to keep his points lead. However a first corner mishap made it hard to pass the pack and reel Stewart in who was sitting in second. Reed worked his way up from twentieth to finish seventh at the races end. His worst result this year for Reed who has finished on the podium every race.

Stewart, who started the race with difficulties, stalled his bike and could not catch Villopoto who had settled in a comfortable lead. Stewart managed to end the night in second place. Stewart entered the race three points down now and now leads by five.

“It’s definitely awesome,” said Villopoto after coming away with the win in Seattle. Villopoto had missed the previous three rounds due to illness and is out of contention for the championship, but showed that may be a contender for the title next season.

The dirt brought into Qwest Field for the event was mostly sand which allowed for deep ruts and rapid changing track conditions that forced riders to be extra cautious. The track was made and prepped by Dirt Wurx who designs and builds all the tracks nationwide for the supercross series.

Supercross started coming to Seattle in 1978 but took a five year break from the city in 2000. Previous two years Seattle round winners are Kevin Windham and James Stewart Jr., who won the race in treacherous conditions due to rain.

This U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey disk located on a private Island in the Washington side of the San Juan Islands. This disk is dated 1897 which represents the date it was placed. There are three on this particular Island, and the triangles line up latitude and longitude lines in respect to the triangulation station somewhere in the vicinity.

The U.S. Coast & Geodetic was established in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson to help chart waters for safer navigation. It has since been renamed twice and is now National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

According to a NGS surveyor the disks are named by the area or property owner, dated, and is meant to be read by someone facing North. This one says PLANE 1897 and has a 250 dollar fine for disturbing.

How Far Must You Go To Be Number 1

On April 18 at the Seattle AMA Supercross, Ryan Capes Claims he will beat his previous world record of 390 ft. at Toes Motocross Park in Royal City Wash. Capes held the record before Robbie Madison who had the record before Capes at 322ft. Capes says he will jump over 500 ft. later this year, which will just crush the previous record.

He will jump a custom built Service Kawasaki 500cc two stroke motocross bike. Capes said at the moment his bike is capable of speeds exceeding 120mph. His jump speed was 101mph. for his previous jump.

When Capes attempts his jumps and succeeds, Who will step up and go even farther? There are not very many people in the world who make a living breaking records, and it's not a job that gets any easier.

April 18, 2009, is the one day of the year that Supercross comes to the northwest, taking place in QWEST Field home of the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle, WA .
This is an exciting season as this is 15 of 17 in the championship. James Stewart trails Chad Reed by 5 points for the lead in the standings. Seattle can make or break the two of the worlds fastest racers season. There are also some additional factors that riders must prepare for coming to QWEST Field, it's not a covered stadium, and it has rained at this event in past. But they race rain or shine.
Tickets are still on sale, so if you have never been to a Supercross race it's guaranteed excitment

Motocross is a tough sport, because it’s expensive, physically demanding, dangerous, but also hopelessly addicting. And that is why millions of people ride and race, but it is also why so few actually make it a living and compete at the national pro level of the sport and turn riding into a career.

Nic Wolfer, 22, Beaver Creek, Ore., is a local pro that is going for broke this season in an attempt to earn his national pro license and race the 2009 AMA Motocross Nationals series at Washougal MX Park on July 25.

Wolfer has genuinely kind and pleasant personality that almost seems to quickly disappear once his helmet is on. On the track Wolfer shows no fear and rides with a smooth style that makes it look it easy. But Wolfer is not afraid to bang bars with anyone at any given race as his passes are some of the most aggressive in any local pro race.

The motocross nationals are one of the top motocross championships in the world. Washougal MX Park holds round eight of the national series every year and draws crowds in excess of 30,000, and has been called the most scenic track on the circuit.

The American Motorcyclist Association requires a rider to obtain 75 points as an A-Class rider in AMA PRO-AM motocross series events in order to apply for a license in an attempt to qualify for any round in this series.

With a majority of the West Coast races held down outside the Northwest, it’s hard for a full time OSU and LBCC student to travel far regularly. Wolfer said “There are not too many of these races in this area. Most of them (nearby races) take place in Southern California during the school year and I can’t make it to them like other racers can.”

At five years old Wolfer got his first dirt bike for Christmas, but got a late start racing and started at 14. “I wanted to start before then but my mom always over ruled my dad. Then she finally gave in and little did she know I would win my first race and want to keep doing it this long.” Wolfer says most what people don’t understand about motocross is that it is very family oriented, and that it takes a lot of dedication from everyone to make it work.

Wolfer says his biggest achievement was turning pro and being able to do it in such a short time is a great accomplishment for him. “I mean I know people that have been racing longer than me that still aren’t pro, so for me to do it in the time period that I have done it in is also one of my greatest achievements,” said Wolfer.

On April 5, 2009, Wolfer battled hard for the lead in every race he entered at Washougal’s Gold Star series race. Wolfer ended the day finishing fourth overall and earning 18 valuable points towards his national license. He currently sits fourth in the points standings.
